Meet your personal voice trainer

The Vocal Workout Method offers a proven, specialized approach to singing lessons in Pop/Rock, Soul, R&B, Jazz, and Gospel styles taught by expert voice teacher, ILana Martin. The school’s mission is to produce strong, fearless singers who inspire the world on a professional level.

Built from a core foundation of diaphragmatic breath control and intense awareness of vocal placement, a Vocal Workout class combines breath, alignment, technique, and repetition. This unique bonding method allows the whole body to resonate, improve belting, and find that head voice. Voice coaches guide singing reflexes to the body’s autopilot reflex channel, the most inward part of our muscle memory, until they become natural.

Each Vocal Workout Coach is hand-picked and trained by Ilana Martin and so that every student gets the Vocal Workout Experience. Our voice teachers are masterful and inspirational. We read the body to find places of tension, strain, and inauthenticity. Our coaches provide students with tools for a more integrated production of sound as well as guidance on how to properly care for the voice.

The Founder

Born in Los Angeles, California, ILana Martin was performing at the age of 8. After, Martin entered Boston’s famed Berklee College of Music. She received the first full scholarship offered just for vocalists. This shot her into touring the world multiple times as the founder of the ILana Martin Jazz Quintet and as a supporting vocalist for Barry White, Patti LaBelle, D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Norman Brown, Rafael Martos and others.

Now, Martin connects to Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Alicia Keys for her voice’s sound and character, while her signature phrasing and lyrical tone is one of a kind. Along with her famed vocal coaches, as a master of soul vocal performance and instruction, Martin also performs as a recording pianist. She sings and writes songs for both stage and film.  Martin is a voice teacher, songwriting coach, and R&B and gospel voice expert that wows audiences with her powerful tone and storytelling.  Martin founded the Vocal Workout Singing School in New York City’s Soho in 1998, New York City’s highly favored vocal facility, employing world-class teachers.

She has also toured with artists such as Missy Elliot, Eve, Tweet, Patti Austin, Jessica Simpson, Chico DeBarge, and Angie Stone.  Vocal Workout Singing School’s melodic interpretation with Cheryl Pepsii Riley allows you to learn to sing and improve your voice, harmonize and define your musical ear.

“When I came to the Vocal Workout Singing School, I was a rapper and successful. I would never have known the range, quality, or true nature of my voice without this school.” – S. Aamon

“I feel as if I have encountered a virtuoso of singing school teaching. Finally, I have studied under some remarkable people – at Harvard and also elsewhere – in many areas in college and also business school life, but as a vocalist, I feel I have come across unmatchable teaching.” – Shu

“Finally, I am no longer just alto or soprano, but I also have my own voice which shows my unique style and ideas. At last, teachers make the class warm, never competitive and forced me to be open and humble. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am finally FREE.”
